The Honourable MEC for the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), Mr Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane will tomorrow be leading the Provincial Marine Day celebrations and announcement of the Provincial Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) Awards winners. The programme is taking place in Jeffreys Bay, Newtown Hall from 09h00-13h00.
The Eastern Cape is joining the world in celebrating the National Marine Day whilst the GMC forms part of the province’s ongoing efforts to promote sound environmental management.
The National Marine Celebration’s is aimed at highlighting the importance of ocean and the role it plays in the daily lives of all South Africans with the concomitant National Marine Week designed to create awareness on the marine ecosystem and benefits such as fisheries, and maritime economy amongst others.
Meanwhile the GMC, which forms part of the implementation programme of the National Waste Management Strategy seeks to operationalise the province’s commitments to waste minimisation, efforts towards realisation of Circular Economy and consideration of capacity or resource implications for the implementation of waste management functions aimed at creating awareness on the reduction of waste generation and disposal to landfill.
This year Marine Day is celebrated under the theme ‘Nature Knows No Waste’.
