Jumbo gives away over R150,000 worth of prizes and give aways.
Saturday afternoon saw the annual Jumbo Fun Run take place at Oxford Striders in Nahoon, East London.
Organised bywell-established clothing and footwear retailer, Jumbo, this year’s event was a tremendous success with over 1000runners and walkers participating – which was a huge increase on last year’s numbers.
“The race is well on its way to becoming a fixture in the official annual race calendar, said Alan Scheckter, CEO of Jumbo Stores, “and in keeping with the rapid growth of the popular Jumbo brand, this year’s race was bigger and better than ever with over R150000 worth of prizes and give-aways on offer.”
All participants, of both the 5km fun run and 10km official race, received a T-shirt and Jumbo gift voucher worth R20, which more than covered the R15 race entry fee.
This year the top three runners in the Open category (ages 16-39) received cash and matching value Jumbo gift vouchers of R500, R300 and R200 and the first, second and third-place winners in another three age groups all received cash and a gift voucher of matching value of R300, R200 and R100 respectively,
The event, which was held in perfect weather conditions, attracted both serious athletes and families looking for a fun event to participate in together.
“With activities which included face painting, jumping castles and a variety of food and drink on offer, the Jumbo Fun Run is bound to become a favourite family event,” said Janine van Aswegen, Marketing Manager of Jumbo Stores.
Adding an exciting new twist to the event this year were the two R5000 sports bursaries that were presented to two young athletes showing the most potential in the Border Athletics region (one male and one female athlete). They were awarded to Sihle Gquzula and Zolane Mangaliso. Both young athletes are from Nompumelelo in Beacon Bay.
There was also a brand new laptop and colour printer up for grabs to be won by the school with the most entries. This was won by Nompumelelo Primary School, led on the day by Mr Wellington Kolisele.
“Jumbo places huge significance on community involvement.Since the late 1970’s, the company has contributed to the communities in the greater Eastern Cape region through donations, bursaries and, more recently, sporting events such as this annual Jumbo 5km and 10km Fun Run,” explained Scheckter. He said events such as these really bring communities together and promote a healthy, outdoor activity for all to enjoy. “We are already planning for next year’s exciting event,” he said.
“Giving back to the community is a sign of Jumbo’s appreciation for the loyalty and support of its customers. This is also of great importance to the Jumbo Team as they take great pride in the knowledge that Jumbo is committed to community involvement,” said Scheckter.
