Mercedes-Benz today announced a brand partnership through its “Friends of the Brand” programme with the World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion, Zolani Tete. The partnership sees Tete receive a Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC; one of the C-Class models built in the award-winning East London Plant, which celebrates its 60th year of manufacturing excellence this year.
Tete hails from Mdantsane — the second largest township in South Africa and the Mecca of Boxing. He is the current record holder of the fastest world title knock-out in boxing history, after delivering a knock-out punch just six seconds into the match. His rise from humble beginnings to world reigning champion through sheer discipline and passion is not only an inspiration to our hometown but to the world over.
“I deem myself fortunate to be part of this event, through which we honour one of East London’s sons for his contribution to society and his impeccable character, which he has displayed through his craft as well as his conduct,” said Abey Kgotle, Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs Mercedes-Benz South Africa. The announcement was made at the Mercedes-Benz and Laureus Foundation boxing-themed breakfast.
Tete’s successful career translates to the C-Class brand claim to “never stop improving” as it illustrates just how much Mercedes-Benz and the elite athlete have in common. This campaign emphasizes the devotion it takes to be the best, and stay the best. Just as Tete trains day after day to hone his performance, Mercedes-Benz refines its best-selling model’s performance with each generation.
“Every time you sit behind the wheel of that C 43, we at Mercedes-Benz would like you to remember that it comes from the men and women hailing from all corners of your hometown, East London. These are the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, who tirelessly work to give life to metal. These are the people who are cheering you on, and are proud to call you a friend to their beloved brand,” concludes Kgotle.
“I wish to thank my community, family and team because if it wasn’t for them in my life, I wouldn’t be partnering with Mercedes-Benz today. I also thank Mercedes-Benz. It is a dream come true to be a Friend of the Brand. I’ve seen others being sponsored but I never thought it would happen to me. Everything I was doing was to support my family. I didn’t know that I was having such an impact on others,” says Tete.
