Negotiations on the land for the establishment of an Aquaculture Development Zone (ADZ) in the Coega IDZ will be finalised by June this year.
The Industrial Policy Action Plan for 2012/13 states that the intention is to start with the development of infrastructure for the Coega ADZ in the third quarter of the current financial year.
The Plan says aquaculture is the “fastest-growing food production section in the world” growing at an annual rate of 8-10%. In 2010, however, the sector in South Africa grew by only 3%.
Growth has averaged 5% over the past 10 years “and the prospect of achieving 10-20% growth in the near future is realistic”.
