Blue Crane Coffee Company (BCCC), a roastery and coffee laboratory in the centre of Stellenbosch, is adding to its dynamic coffee offerings by doubling-up as a local art showroom.
Kickstarting its initiative to support local artists at the town’s recent ‘Last Thursdays’ community initiative, BCCC took the reigns as the first coffee outlet to display pieces by up-and-coming acrylic painter, Xenia Venter.
‘Last Thursdays’, a monthly community-driven event backed by the Stellenbosch University Visual Arts Department, promotes the exploring of Stellenbosch’s galleries, to showcase entrepreneurs and freelance artists’ work to the public.
The on-foot route is aimed at bringing locals and visitors together and celebrate the town’s rich culture and creative potential.
“We’re excited to participate in a community project that boosts residents and visitors’ interests in new and established artists’ talents”, says Michael Jones, BCCC founder and co-owner.
“The BCCC team is looking forward to continuing to play an active part in similar upcoming initiatives, offer a space that complements locals’ aesthetic skills and add more visuals to the mix”.
BCCC started their involvement with ‘Last Thursdays’ and general everyday demonstrations by incorporating Xenia Venter’s expressive acrylic paintings, an interesting addition to the roastery and coffee laboratory’s historic architecture.
BCCC (which opened its doors in 2016) forms part of the original De Oude Pastorie building in Dorp Street. With the longstanding building’s original, and beautiful scaffolding as a backdrop to Venter’s dramatic, bold artwork, the latest Last Thursday (28 September) offered various visual elements that attracted good public interest.
The team behind the BCCC concept includes Michael, co-owners Henniel Smit and Wilhelm Fismer, as well as experienced coffee brewer and coffee laboratory lead, Charles-Napier Joubert.
BCCCs art displays can be viewed every day, except Sundays, in its Work Room, the latest addition the BCCC stable.
The Room, a refurbished private office and meeting area, separate from the roastery’s public lounge, provides corporates and individuals seeking a productive workspace away from the hustle and bustle, a quiet and modern area to complete tasks and consult with others around a boardroom table.
An hourly, customised Work Room package, starting at approximately R600 (R60 per person), includes refreshments during your visit or meeting, unlimited WiFi, AV setup and pretty much everything you need to get down to business.
Special breakfast, lunch and full day rates are also available.
The Work Room, including BCCCs lounge, will don a rotating art and photographic display by various talented individuals. BCCC trades from Monday to Fridays (7h00 to 17h00) and on Saturdays (8h00 to 12h30).
